A Whiskered Tern in the Rice Paddies
A Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) seen this morning in the rice paddies of Del Pilar here on Siargao Island,
It’s quite common for us here on Siargao to see the Black-naped tern (Sterna sumatrana), an oceanic tern, on the boat ride to Surigao city and the mainland of Mindanao. However the whiskered tern, being the largest of the marsh terns, is more often associated with freshwater.
The whiskered tern eats small fish, amphibians, terrestrial and aquatic insects, as well as crustaceans.
Interestingly, the whiskered tern builds a nest that sits in shallow water or even floats on deeper water.
