The Black-faced Coucal (Centropus melanops) is often heard around our backyard but until today it’s been a challenge to photograph. I was happy to get a few shots of this Philippine endemic cuckoo as it moved around the trees next to the river this morning.

We spotted this Philippine pygmy squirrel climbing a coconut tree near our front porch very early this morning. Found only in the Mindanao Faunal Region this endemic species is also called the Mindanao pygmy squirrel. Locally it’s known as “buot“.

Tobacco Vendor

Every Wednesday morning just around 5:30 we get a visit from the tobacco vendor from Dapa. People wake up early around here but there’s not too much traffic that time of day and usually he displays his wares for sale right on the road.
