Siargao Birding with My Nephew Miljune

My nephew Miljune came to hang out today; he really likes birds and lizards and stuff so we get along famously. Not long after he arrived we heard some noisy rustling of dried palm fronds behind the house. Not sure if it was a large bird or perhaps a sailfin lizard we rushed outside to check […]

Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris)

Our Backyard Birds

Updates have been a little slow of late after I took a spill down a mountainside just after photographing that Handsome Sunbird nest. Being temporarily restricted to sedentary observation of our backyard birds, I thought I’d showcase those seen most commonly around our house these days. Looks like there’s some pelagic birding in store for […]

The Handsome Sunbird (Aethopyga bella) on Siargao island.

Handsome Sunbird (Aethopyga bella)

This Handsome Sunbird (yes, that’s really its name!) nest was spotted while climbing up a steep slope on the back of our property here on Siargao island early this morning. I found a spot nearby to sit, wait and watch for the sunbirds to return.

The Black-faced Coucal (Centropus melanops) on Siargao island.

The Black-faced Coucal (Centropus melanops)

Three of its siblings had been found dead at the nest and some village kids from  barangay Mabini in Santa Monica brought the […]

Red-keeled Flowerpecker and Nest

This morning we walked to some neighbouring houses along the river to buy a few crabs. We were a bit late however and the crabs were sold out and the villagers were already occupied with making nipa roofing panels. However right above their heads I spotted the nest of a red-keeled flowerpecker and a a hyper-active parent […]

Purple Heron in Flight

While it’s not uncommon to see the purple heron (Ardea purpurea) flying singly around the island, getting a shot in flight remains a challenge for me. Yesterday while approaching a pond near San Isidro, I inadvertently flushed this purple heron along with a few wandering whistling ducks. The latter took off too fast for me […]
