Little Ringed Plover

On the under-construction farm-to-market road leading to Borawin (Buhing Kalipay) I found this pair of little ringed plovers (Charadrius dubius dubius). They weren’t very shy and I was able to set up the new tripod my wife gifted me yesterday and get a few good shots.

The golden yellow orbital ring is diagnostic and easily distinguishes the little ringed plover from other plover species.

April-May is this plover’s breeding season and they nest and lay their eggs on unprepared rocky areas.

And just then a hermit crab slowly ambled by…

The little ringed plover has a large range and is a resident here in the Philippines but there are migrant populations as well.
