Our Global Big Day 2017 Checklist.

Today was the 2017 Global Big Day and it’s been a long day of hiking around and we had to dodge quite a bit of rain with intermittent downpours. But we had enthusiastic young participants who were just starting to learn their way around optics and bird books but were real naturals in the field and made it a great event for us.

Here’s a partial list, in no particular order, of what we were able to positively identify as well as a few photos:

Wandering Whistling-Duck

The wandering whistling duck (Dendrocygna arcuata)

Philippine Duck
Gray Heron

Purple Heron (I’d written recently about my struggle to get a good shot of a Purple Heron in flight. Today’s effort was a slight improvement, I think)

Again, I’d like to say thanks to the two eager and active young lads who joined us today. It was great seeing birding on Siargao become a part of their lives. I’m looking forward to more days in the field with you guys!
