The brown tit-babbler (Macronus striaticeps)

Brown Tit-babbler (Macronus striaticeps)

There’s only one photo of this Brown Tit-babbler as I have seen it just the one time. After a mid-morning hike to the top of the hill on our property where the cacao trees and civets are this Philippine endemic appeared out of nowhere along the trail and in very close camera range. Luckily I managed to get this one semi-clear shot before it flew off back into the forest. As I recall, it was fairly noisy and active as it flitted about the understory.

I’m hoping for another chance encounter with the brown tit-babbler as it’s listed as not uncommon in its range but for now it will remain a ‘lifer’ seen for the first and only time right here on our home patch on Siargao.

Update: August 4th, 2017:

Saw this elusive Brown Tit-babbler again (and only for the second time) just about a year after the first sighting. It was not more than a meter or two from where the first one was sighted.
